The record

Christmas 2025

Four nights on the Sapphire Coast over Christmas — the beach a short walk from the park, and a lot of wind through the banksias. Photographs and clips from the mornings; the written guide is still to come.

A long curve of beach seen from the grassy verge above the road, blue water, a wooded headland at the far end and cars parked along the foreshore
The beach from the road above — 22 December 2025, 08:02
The same bay a few seconds later, looking along the beach towards houses on the headland, someone walking up the road in the foreground
Five seconds later, looking the other way — 08:03
Looking out through a mesh panel to windblown banksia trees and the sea beyond, a guy rope running across the frame
Out through the mesh — 24 December, 08:35
Morning from under the awning — most of a minute, wind and water
The rock platform at the end of the beach — swell coming in over the shelf
Wind through the banksias — three seconds of it
The same trees, wider
And again, towards the water
Last of the four
Looking out from inside a shade tent at dusk, fairy lights along the arch, a lantern hanging at the side, a laid table and two camp chairs facing the sea through banksias
Inside the shade tent, first night — 21 December 2025, 20:28
A boy walking down wet sand towards clear green surf, a low headland running out to a dark rocky point on the far side of the beach
Short Point Beach — 22 December, 11:52
The inside of a timber slab cheese factory fitted out as a museum, with a wooden cheese vat, a cream separator, barrels and a wall of framed historic photographs
Inside the old cheese factory — 23 December, 13:41
An interpretive sign fixed to a roof beam reading THE CHEESE FACTORY, explaining that the building came from the Burgess farm Dundindi
Built about 1869, closed in 1910, moved here in 1995 — 13:52
A mown grass slope above an inlet at sunset with a picnic table on a concrete pad, a shelter and a silver Airstream van parked on the rise behind
Sunset at Short Point, the coffee van on the rise — 19:11

More to come. This page is the record so far. What the site cost, which part of the park to ask for, and what is worth driving to along the Sapphire Coast are going into the written guide, and we would rather leave them out than guess.

Getting there

How far it is, and how to get there without a car

One map, and one question: how far south, north or inland is this actually? Then, if you are not driving, what runs — and what does not.

NRMA Merimbula BeachMerimbula AirportMerimbula coach stopBomaderry — nearest trainSydney 200 km
454 km by road · about 6 hours driving — the line is straight-line distance, not the route

Fly

Rex, Sydney to Merimbula Airport, about an hour and a quarter, then 4 km. Check their schedule tool — Rex publishes no network timetable.

Coach

Premier Motor Service, Sydney Central to Eden, seven days a week, calling at Merimbula. About ten hours.

Train and coach

NSW TrainLink train to Canberra, then coach 771 to Merimbula. About nine hours on one ticket.

The last leg. This is the one on the Sapphire Coast you can do without a car.

The park is about 2 km from the middle of Merimbula and 4 km from the airport, and it sits inside the Flexibus on-demand zone, which you book by app or phone.

Taxis operate in town.

The nearest railway station is Bomaderry, 330 km north — there is no passenger rail south of it, so ignore the train unless you are coming via Canberra.

Every service above was checked against the operator’s own timetable rather than a travel site, but timetables change and some operators publish no frequency at all — where that is so, we have said so instead of guessing.

Worth the drive

What there is to do

Nearly everything here is free and outdoors.

The two paid attractions people actually drive for each come with a catch — Magic Mountain runs a season rather than a year, and the aquarium publishes no admission price anywhere.

Only two things on this list charge to enter as a place rather than as a ticket, and both are national parks: Bournda at $8 a vehicle a day, and the Green Cape end of Beowa at the same.

The whole northern half of Beowa, the Pinnacles included, is free.

The real surprise is that Merimbula has no surf life saving club at all — its beaches are covered by contract lifeguards during the summer school holidays only.

The nearest volunteer patrols are at Pambula and Tathra, and for most of the year the water here is unpatrolled.

  • Bar BeachAbout ten minutes, back through town and over the bridge, on the channel at the mouth of Merimbula Lake.Sheltered from the summer northerlies and effectively wave-free, which makes it the best local option for small children. The standard local trick is to float in on the incoming tide. The catch is the same thing that makes it calm: it sits on a tidal channel that runs hard, so the current is the hazard, not the surf.Sources disagree on whether it is patrolled seven days in summer or only over the school holidays; assume the shorter figure.Patrol seasons and hours change — Surf Life Saving Australia’s Beachsafe has the current position for every Australian beach.Free

Local, for us

Groceries, mandirs and where to eat

Treat groceries as something you bring with you.

There is no South Asian grocer anywhere on the far south coast — the one that existed, Raymond Grocery in Bega, opened in 2023 and closed around May 2024 after about a year, its owner telling the local paper his electricity was running near $6,000 a quarter.

Directory listings still show it as open.

There is likewise no mandir or gurudwara within about three hours.

Eating out is better than you would expect for a town this size, but for strictly vegetarian food there is exactly one option in the whole shire, half an hour away in Bega and weekday daytimes only — plan around it rather than hoping.

Small coastal kitchens cut back hard outside summer, and both Indian restaurants give conflicting information about which day they close, so ring between about April and October.

Indian grocery

  • Nothing in the Bega ValleyNot in Merimbula, Pambula, Tura Beach, Tathra, Bega or Eden.We checked the shire, then north to Batemans Bay and west to Canberra. There is not even a general Asian grocer here to fall back on.Woolworths and Coles carry basmati, a few jars and ground spices, and nothing more.
  • Raymond Grocery, Bega — closedWorth knowing because the listings outlast the shop.211 Carp Street, Bega: an Indian, Nepalese and Asian grocer that opened in early 2023 with dals, bulk spices and specialty flours, and closed around May 2024.Its Facebook page and several directory entries survive it. Do not drive to Bega expecting it.
  • Spice Market ACT, Canberra — the nearest real oneUnit 1, 43–57 Townshend Street, Phillip ACT — about three and a quarter hours, so this is a stop on the drive rather than an errand from the park.Their own site lists atta and flour mixes, grains and legumes, spice mixes, frozen naan and roti, and pooja items: the full list.Hours are not published; ring 0450 560 297.If you are coming down through Canberra, buy here.

Mandirs and gurudwaras

  • None on the far south coastNo mandir, gurudwara or Hindu or Sikh place of worship exists anywhere in the Bega Valley Shire, or between Bermagui and the Victorian border. No congregation or hall-hire arrangement surfaced either. We searched the shire, then north to Batemans Bay and Nowra and west to Cooma and Canberra.
  • Guru Nanak Darbar South Coast, Nowra13 Westbrook Road, Nowra — about three and a quarter hours north, so a day trip and not a detour.Darbar Sahib open daily 5 am to 7 pm; Sundays Sukhmani Sahib Paath from 10, kirtan 11:30 to 1, langar 1 to 3.They have moved premises, so older directory entries carry the wrong address. WhatsApp +61 424 204 562.
  • Hindu Temple and Cultural Centre of the ACT81 Ratcliffe Crescent, Florey ACT — about three and a half hours.Full priest services, at the temple and at homes, with suggested donations published.Opening hours are not published; ring 0434 976 524.

Pure vegetarian — any cuisine

  • Red Cafe, Bega — the only one161 Carp Street, Bega — about thirty minutes from the park. The only fully vegetarian kitchen in the shire.Weekdays only, roughly 8 to 2:30 — a breakfast and lunch cafe, not a dinner option.Lacto-ovo, so eggs and cheese are on the menu; vegan items are reportedly not marked, so ask.Two sources disagree on the closing time and a “cash only” note may be out of date. 0422 402 912.
  • Nothing on the coast itselfMerimbula, Pambula, Tura Beach, Tathra and Eden have no fully vegetarian venue.HappyCow returns no listings at all for Merimbula, which is telling for a town this size.

Indian restaurants — vegetarian and non-vegetarian

  • Legacy of India, Merimbula5/17 Merimbula Drive — about five minutes.Indian and Nepali: momos and a Thakali khana set alongside the familiar butter chicken and rogan josh.Substantial vegetarian section with vegan and gluten-friendly items marked, but the kitchen also does chicken, lamb, beef, goat, prawn and fish.Dinner daily 5 to 9; lunch Friday to Sunday 12 to 2.Their own site says they close Mondays and Tripadvisor says Tuesday — ring (02) 6427 0050, particularly midwinter.
  • Cafe Tandoori, Pambula1/22 Toallo Street — about twelve to fifteen minutes, so the further of the two from here.Lunch 11:30 to 2, dinner 5 to 8:30.Their own site carries a 2022 copyright and publishes no days of the week, so we cannot say which days it trades.Ring (02) 6409 5723.
