Using this site, and where the responsibility sits
The short version: we check everything we publish and we correct it when we are wrong, but conditions change, we have not been everywhere, and the decision to drive, swim, camp or book is yours. Check the things that matter with the operator or the authority before you rely on them.
What we try to do
Every fact on this site is meant to be traceable to a record, a primary source, or something we saw ourselves. Prices, opening hours and services are checked against the operator’s own material rather than a directory, and where an operator publishes no figure we say so instead of repeating one from somewhere else. Pages carry the month they were last checked.
What we cannot do
We cannot keep up with everything. Businesses close, move and change hands. Fares, timetables and entry fees change, sometimes at short notice and sometimes retrospectively. Roads close, ferries stop running in bad weather, beaches stop being patrolled at the end of the season, and a track that was easy in March can be washed out by June. A page checked in September is a snapshot of September.
So: verify anything you are going to rely on. If a fee, an opening hour, a road condition or a transport connection matters to your trip, confirm it with the operator or the relevant authority before you set out. Every entry on this site links to that source for exactly this reason.
Safety is yours to judge
A good deal of what we write about happens outdoors: surf beaches, some of them unpatrolled; national parks; alpine roads in winter; lakes, rivers and rock platforms.
We describe what we found on the day we were there.
We are not qualified to assess conditions on the day you go, and nothing here is a substitute for current official advice — National Parks and Wildlife Service alerts, Surf Life Saving flags and beach reports, Bureau of Meteorology warnings, Live Traffic New South Wales (NSW), the Rural Fire Service, and the operator of the place you are going.
If official advice and this site disagree, follow the official advice.
Not professional advice
Nothing on this site is legal, financial, medical, insurance or professional travel advice, and it is not a recommendation to buy anything. The concessions page in particular is a plain-English list of government schemes and nothing more — eligibility rules are stricter than any summary can carry, and the only page that binds anyone is the government’s own.
Prices and conversions
Every price is in Australian dollars and that is what you will be charged. If you switch the site to another currency, what appears in brackets is an approximate conversion worked out from a rate frozen when the site was last built. It will drift. Do not budget from it, and never assume a business will accept another currency.
Links to other sites
We link out constantly, because we would rather send you to the source than ask you to trust us. Those sites are not ours, we do not control what they publish or what they collect, and a link is not an endorsement. Where a link earns us a commission it is disclosed on the page it appears on, and it never changes what we say about the thing.
Our photographs and words
Everything here is our own work and it is not licensed for reuse. If you want to use something, ask us — we are usually happy to say yes.
Liability
We publish this in good faith and we put real work into getting it right. But you use the site, and act on what is here, at your own risk. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss, cost, injury or damage arising from your use of this site or from anything you did or did not do because of it — including where information has become out of date, incomplete or wrong.
That is not us trying to escape the law. Nothing here excludes, restricts or modifies any guarantee, right or remedy under the Australian Consumer Law that cannot be excluded, and we would not want it to. Where liability can be limited but not excluded, it is limited to re-supplying the information or paying the cost of doing so.
Tell us when we are wrong
This is the part that actually matters. If something here is out of date, inaccurate or has closed, write to hello@saltandsnow.au and we will fix it and say so. We have already corrected several things this way, including more than one of our own mistakes.
